I Threw a Watch Party Over the Weekend: Netflix's Tall Girl

Over the weekend, I threw a Watch Party at home for my girls and I.  Weekly, we watch shows and movies together but never specifically got food, snacks, and drinks for a family movie night.  I thought this would be a good time to do one to make the occasion special.

On Friday, while the girls were in school, I headed to Costco to get all the delicious tasty treats we needed, and I nicely prepared the snacks on my serving dishware when I got home.

When the girls return home from school, they couldn't wait to feast their hands on the sandwich rolls, and chicken wraps, including myself!

The family comedy (teen rom-com) we watched was Netflix's Tall Girl, a heartfelt comedy that focuses on themes of accepting and loving your true self while navigating youth.  The film is about the tallest girl in school who is uncomfortable with her height. And due to her size, she is made fun of by her peers which makes her more insecure about herself.

This family comedy is a good way of showing my girls about self-love. The film is relatable to them because they too deal with things about themselves they don't like and try to hide it from the kids at school. Like for instance, Lauren no longer loves her curly hair and want to start wearing weaves to fit in with other girls.  One of her friends told her that wearing hair weaves helps your hair grow and is more pretty.  If only this friend's parents would tell their daughter to embrace the hair they have, she would proudly display the hair she is born with.

And Michelle, she doesn't like wearing her natural hair in certain ways because she got made fun of.  Remember the way Michelle wore her hair on the first day of school?  She got teased for it, with students saying that the top of her head looks like a bush.

Tall Girl sadly reminded me of what I endure in middle and high school with students making fun of my broad forehead.  I would hide my forehead under bangs in hopes of the teasing to stop.  But once I graduated high school, I grew out my bangs and displayed my forehead proudly.  This is who I am, take it, or leave it!

With me being a parent, I teach my girls that they are beautiful just the way they are. We all have things we may not like about ourselves, but that is what makes us special and unique. The world would be boring if we all look alike.

The film is a good conversation starter about body positivity. It'll make you laugh, shed a tear, and cheer!  Make sure to have a Netflix's Tall Girl movie watch party.

About Netflix's Tall Girl

Jodi (Ava Michelle) has always been the tallest girl in school — and she's always been uncomfortable with it. After slouching her way through life for 16 years and being made fun of by classmates, Jodi meets Stig (Luke Eisner), a seemingly perfect Swedish foreign exchange student who's even taller than she is. Jodi's new crush turns her world upside down and throws her into a surprising love triangle, but with the help of her two best friends (Griffin Gluck, Anjelika Washington) as well as her beauty queen sister Harper (Sabrina Carpenter), Jodi comes to realize that she's far more than her insecurities about her appearance have led her to believe. TALL GIRL, director Nzingha Stewart's first feature film, is a heartfelt and hilarious coming-of-age story about finding the confidence to stop slouching and stand tall.

Disclosure:  Thank you Netflix for sponsoring today's post, and showing that we're all beautiful just the way we are!
