Hey Yall! I hope you all had a fun, relaxing Labor Day Weekend. What did you all do for your last hurrah of summer?
I had no plans of doing anything for Labor Day Weekend, just kick my feet up and chill. But the girls kept pestering me about what we were going to do for the three days off.
At first, I thought about us going to the Fernbank Museum since we had an extra ticket when I purchased City Passes last week.
But while browsing through my Facebook wall trying to get ideas I ran across an article posted by Atlanta Parent about visiting Helen, Georgia with kids.
Never have we been to Helen, nor did we even know anything about it. I told myself that the girls and I would do more exploring here in Georgia this year. So much stuff to do and see in our own backyard, no need to always book trips in other states.
Helen is a little over an hour away from where I live and an hour and thirty minutes away from Atlanta, so perfect quick getaway without needing to book a hotel for overnight stay.
Saturday we made the immediate trip up the highway to Helen and was in awe checking out the great outdoor scenery and the re-creation of an old-world alpine village nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Chattahoochee River. We felt like we were no longer in Georgia, but instead a replica of Germany.
Helen is a place to escape the city life. A place to unwind and relax while enjoying the unique mountain heritage.
Just because it's a peaceful town, there are still fun things to do there with family.
Helen offers more than 200 specialty and import shops, restaurants and quality hotels. Outside of town, there are cabins available for a cozier mountain experience.
As for amenities, visitors can enjoy river tubing, golf, horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, zip lining, mountain biking, hiking, a water park, mining, and more! Plus, Helen hosts one of the nation's longest Oktoberfest each year, bringing in thousands of visitors.
It was bumper to bumper traffic once we arrived, but we managed to find parking right at one of Helen's top authentic German restaurants, Bodensee. They serve traditional German dishes.
German meals mainly consist of pork, and you all know I don't eat that, but I was thankful to see other meat options like chicken, beef, seafood, and veal.
Since I have never eaten German food before, I was unsure what dish to order, so I asked our friendly waitress her top recommendations.
She told me the fan favorite, and the most ordered meal is the chicken breast in mushroom gravy sauce.
I'm glad she mentioned this savory dish, seasoned so well, full of flavor. Just looking at my platter at first, and the price tag, I expected more. But I wiped my dish clean and was fulfilled. I would visit again.
After lunch/dinner, we went walking around to walk off our food, also check out all the neat shops and treat ourselves to yummy deserts.
I can't believe I never knew about this amazing place. With Helen being so close by, we'll be visiting there often when we're looking for something to do, instead of being unproductive at home.
Helen reminds me of Gatlinburg, TN, with the laid back Alpine feel and looks, also located in the mountains as well. Now, when I need a dose of small town Alpine life, I have two places to visit.
For the rest of our Labor Day Weekend, Sunday and Monday, we kept quiet at home watching movies and doing chores around the house.
Nearby make sure to visit Babyland General Hospital, home of the Cabbage Patch Kids, and also the first Georgia Mountain coaster.
Looks like fun. I will definitely put that on my to-do list.
