Every year for my birthday, we go out to eat as a family at a restaurant of my choosing.  Since my family and I were spending time in coastal Alabama, I wanted my birthday lunch to be anything that serves seafood.  I had my mind made up to have either etouffee a favorite Cajun and Creole dish or seafood gumbo.

We were going to go to Acme Oyster House in Gulf Shores, Alabama, but that restaurant was 45 minutes in the opposite direction because after lunch we were heading back home to Atlanta.

The historian from the Grand Hotel told us about The Original Oyster House near Mobile, Alabama we should try out.  She said the food was delicious and won't disappoint, and better than Acme Oyster House.

We were sold after hearing that!

The Original Oyster House seafood restaurant first opened its doors in Gulf Shores in 1983 (the year I was born!). Their restaurant on the Causeway, overlooking Mobile Bay, opened in 1985. Since then they have proudly served the Gulf Coast the best seafood in a casual atmosphere with genuine southern hospitality.

Looking at the restaurant, the decor reminds me of a Joe's Crab Shack with a lot of different stuff hung up on the walls.  And walking down the hallways, it looks like several celebrities, especially New Orleans Saint players have eaten there.

The Original Oyster House serves a variety of different seafood cuisines with their homemade seafood gumbo being the most popular dish.

Everything we order on the menu was prepared with the right amount of southern style spices.  Our meals were full-flavored and tasty down to the last bite!  I kid you not; I would travel all the way to coastal Alabama to have their seafood gumbo again!

Since it was my birthday, they do offer a free slice of their special birthday cake, but I opt out of getting it and had bread pudding for dessert.  The bread pudding was yummy with the taste of cinnamon and raisins, but a little too much whiskey was added to it, my only complaint.

  1. Boy, you did a lot of fun things for your birthday! I don't eat seafood myself, but it looks like you all enjoyed yourself.
