Cruising down the strip in Pigeon Forge, TN, you'll notice a massive concert theater, Smoky Mountain Opry. I visit Pigeon Forge several times a year and would see this glitzy bright lighted theater, and wondered what played at this venue.
Over the weekend, I visited the Smoky Mountain Opry for the first time and got to see what it is all about. The first impression, I thought the concert would be more of songs inspired by the Smoky Mountains, basically country music jubilee. But, I was pleasantly surprised that the performances played were some of the all-time greatest hits with a wide variety of musical genres and styles. From country hits to classic rock, and Broadway to the Silver Screen, the music had us all singing, and dancing in our seat.
It was more than just music acts; there was also high flying aerialists, magic tricks, comedy acts, and juggling. This show had something for everyone.
And the fantastic production set, special effects, glamorous costumes, singers, dancers, it had my family and I blown away! There were laser lights, rain, ceiling turning into a stary sky, fire, and ribbon dancing.
What a great round of talented performers! Round of applause for such an entertaining show! Even my girls mentioned to me that they were surprised how good it was because they came to the show not expecting much from it.
My favorite part of the show was the journey through the decades. They sang music from the '40s through the '80s/90's. My favorite era is 70's disco that I'm always groovin' to in my car!
My daughters listen to a variety of different music from country, pop, and rock, so the majority of songs performed at the Opry they knew as well.
What I appreciated most during the show was the ending tribute gospel song, patriotic act, and giving thanks to the Veterans. It brought tears to my eyes. That's one of the reasons why I love the Smoky Mountains so much, how the people show their love of God's blessings and gratitude to our Veterans.
This variety show was very well done, and I'm glad we had the opportunity to see it. It's like Vegas show with southern charm.
After the show, the performers come out to the front lobby to do a meet and greet. We chatted with the host of the show, who by the way has a gorgeous, powerful voice, and she shared with us that she does a total of 19 costume changes! Wow, and the performers change their costumes quickly throughout the show too!
I do like to mention that the Smoky Mountain Opry is not a dinner show; however, there is a concession stand with savory popcorn, drinks, and candies, just like if you were going to a movie theater. The seating in the Opry theater has cup holders for drinks.
And tip, get your snacks and use the restroom before the show or during intermission because the rows are a tight squeeze and people next to you have to stand up to let you through.
Also, coming this holiday season is Christmas at the Smoky Mountain Opry. It is a multi-million dollar Christmas production that features flying sugar plum fairies, soaring angels, dancing elves, enchanted reindeer, Jolly Ol' Saint Nick, and most importantly, the celebration of the birth of Christ with the area's most significant living nativity!
