Is Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Worth Seeing? My Honest Review (No Spoilers)

I attended the sneak preview of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 before being released in theaters on April 8th.

I haven't seen the first Sonic movie, but I remember the commotion about how Sonic looked weird and unlike the original, with the filmmakers going back to the drawing board with Sonic coming back with a new look, looking more like how he was in video games.

After watching the 2nd movie, it seems like the first film was about introducing Sonic, Dr. Robotnik, and how Sonic found his forever home living with humans. But, of course, I could be wrong about this; I need to see the 1st one.

However, the 2nd Sonic film brought in more characters from the hit Sega Genesis game, Sonic's sidekick Tails, and enemy Knuckles. In addition, the movie shares a tale about how both Tails and Knuckles came about.

Even though I didn't see the 1st Sonic, this latest movie was easy to follow and understand what was going on throughout the film.

I'll be honest, I didn't expect much before watching this movie since I'm not a massive fan of live-action. However, the film wasn't that bad. It started off slow but started picking up towards the middle of the movie.

I felt Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik was lacking, as if Jim couldn't really put his all into his role. Maybe I'm used to Jim Carrey's outrageous antics, but he had to be more settled and chill as Dr. Robotnik? Who knows! Also, Dr. Robotnik was a heavy-set man; why was Jim Carrey regular size?

Also, the punchlines were not funny and fell flat, as if the characters were trying too hard to make the audience laugh. Such a disappointment.

When the action started to pick up, it reminded me of the Fast and the Furious movies with a little bit of Hawaii 5-0 show mixed in. It doesn't get you on the edge of your seat; however, it was entertaining to watch the fight scenes.

I'm a huge fan of Sonic the Hedgehog and happy to see him making his return for the new generation. And judging by the ending, the movie saga will continue, and hopefully, it'll keep improving with time.

After the movie was over, I asked both of my daughters what they thought of Sonic 2; my oldest said she enjoyed it, but my youngest thought the movie was corny.

As you know, I thought the movie was okay; not bad, but not the best either. However, it's a fun movie that kids would enjoy, and adults can reminisce about the days they used to play Sonic video games.
